The son of a gun is nothing but a tailor!
Tailor Maurice (Maurice Chevalier) is owed a large amount of money by the Viscount Gilbert de Varèze (Charlie Ruggles). Maurice travels to the Viscount's home and meets Princess Jeanette (Jeanette MacDonald), with whom he soon falls in love.A completely charming film, Love Me Tonight is one of the best musicals I've seen. Maurice Chevalier is charming, and Jeanette MacDonald isn't too bad either. The script is hilarious, and Rouben Mamoulian's direction is fantastic and inventive. There are many fun directorial choices throughout the film, and they add to the film's charm immeasurably.
The supporting cast is great. There's Myrna Loy as the man-hungry Countess Valentine, C. Aubrey Smith as the exasperated Duke d'Artelines, Charlie Ruggles as the deadbeat Viscount and Charles Butterworth as the hapless Count de Savignac.
The score is great too. Rodgers and Hart give us "Isn't It Romantic?", "The Son of a Gun Is Nothing But a Tailor", "Love Me Tonight", "The Poor Apache", and my personal favorite, "Mimi".
I can not recommend this one more highly. First time viewing. 5/5
