A Rather Typical 80's Horror Film

This film begins with a young man named "Spike" (Patrick O'Bryan) who has temporarily lost his motorcycle in a poker game. Needing money to pay his debt and reclaim it he steals from his "Aunt Lucy" (Sandy Dennis) on the advice he had received by dialing a "horrorscope" he had recently learned about. Afterwards, not terribly interested in pursuing any further advice from it, he eventually decides not to call the number any more. Unfortunately, his nerdy cousin "Hoax" (Stephen Geoffreys) is not as fortunate as the more he is bullied at school the deeper he gets involved with the telephone service. To that effect, while Hoax previously relied heavily upon Spike to help him with his difficulties, at the suggestion of an evil spirit emanating from the hot line he soon begins to take matters into his own hands-and this leads to severe consequences for everyone who crosses his path. Now rather than reveal any more and risk ruining the film for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this was a rather typical horror film from the 80's which relies heavily upon special effects and comedy. To be sure, although there are some good moments here and there, there were other parts which tended to drag a bit further on down the line. That being said, while this film certainly wasn't bad by any means, it wasn't exactly a great horror film either and for that reason I have rated it accordingly. Average.
