Propaganda and fluff
Rather than a heartwarming, coherent, meaningful story, it seemed this was just meant to reinforce the Disney brand by depicting a girl and her grandmother bonding over the repair of a Mickey doll. The way it's depicted, though, it seems the doll, after getting torn, was just left out for a while, and it's really unclear why the ear suddenly fall off entirely, and even the climactic scene depicts not some impressive sewing skills but instead the making of a whole bunch of those light-star lantern things. The whole thing is convoluted, and presented rather arbitrarily, with no indication about character motivation and no sense of stakes. Flat, shallow, hollow consumerism. For a much better animated short, I recommend Feast.
