An interesting movie
This was an interesting film. The idea of escaping from reality is nothing new but how it's done here is pretty interesting(and bizarre). Cillian Murphy stars as a film fanatic named Neil. To say he lives for the movies is an understatement. Though his movie knowledge on classics and obscure films is up to date, his life on the other hand isn't. It's pretty boring and uneventful. That all changes when he dumps his girlfriend for a petty reason and soon afterwards, a mysterious woman named Violet(Lucy Liu).enters his store for a movie claiming it's for a friend. After suggesting her one, she returns the next day only getting through half of it.They talk for a bit and from then on she puts him through several bizarre scenarios such as getting tricked into eating someone's food from their picnic basket, and pretending to be drunk to see if Niel would take advantage of her which of course we all know he didn't nor would he. It's interesting but also creepy knowing what this woman's doing. To say Violet turns his world upside down is putting it lightly. Though it's a movie I would stay away from her if she was real.
The movie's interesting to watch. The actors do a good with their characters. It's interesting to see Murphy in a role where he's not menacing or insane. Rather, he's the victim this time. Lucy Liu as the enigmatic Violet is great in this role. You can tell she's having fun in it. Both of them are. She's funny and sweet but also weird and even shady. Her character's fun to watch though I wouldn't want to deal with her knowing what she does.
The supporting cast are also good too, Jason Sudeikis as his friend and coworker, Johnathon's good too. The movie's slice of life with a few experimental techniques such as four screens at one point when Neil's playing guitar and singing on stage to an audience of cardboard cutouts save for Violet who ends up removing her top.
This movie's crazy in all the right ways. It's bizarre but still grounded enough, crazy but also still sane enough to be heartfelt and very creative in expressing it in that regard. With that being said i'd say check it out if you love movies and fantasies. After all, that's usually what a movie is.
